WHAT IS THE POMPE DISEASE?

Mutation in the GAA gene causes Pompe Disease. It affects about 1 in 40000 people on the world. The disease has a low awareness in the world as well as in our country.

Pompe Disease is an inherited disorder caused by the build up of a complex sugar called glycogen in the body’s cells. The accumulation of glycogen in certain organs and tissues, especially muscles, impairs their ability to function normally.

CONSANGUINEOUS MARRIAGE IS A SIGNIFICANT FACTOR

This condition is inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern, which means both copies of the gene in each cell have mutations. In our country awareness rate of disease is rather low, even between the doctors. As known, CONSANGUINEOUS marriages are wide spreaded in our country, so the disease can be found on more people than it is thought. For that reason it has been given a start for a national database study.

INTERNATIONAL POMPE ASSOCIATION (IPA)

IPA is a Netherlands-based federation of Pompe Disease patient’s groups worldwide. It seek to coordinate activities and share experiences and knowledges between different groups.
